They told me I was an out-of-control train about to crash…
Everything changed when the police officer knocked on the door to tell me – a 16-year-old – that my older sister Kristen had died of a brain aneurysm. Cue the start of my parents neglecting me and my whole life spiraling out of control.
I decided now was the perfect time to skip town. It’s the early 90’s, Kurt Cobain runs the grunge music scene and I just experienced some serious trauma. What’s a girl supposed to do? I didn’t want to end up like Kristen, so I grabbed my bucket list, turned up my mixtape of the greatest 90’s hits and fled L.A.. The goal was to end up at Kurt Cobain’s house in Seattle, but I never could have guessed what would happen along the way.
Runaway Train is an emotional read about loss, grief, moving on, and finding your identity. The author took be back to the 90s (what a great time) and provides readers with a raw and sassy character.
Nico is a young girl who has lost her 17 year old sister. She is lost and her parents have left her out because they are grieving. So, Nico decides to live life and not let a moment pass her by. She embarks on a journey to Kurt Cobain’s house in Seattle.
This journey is a wild ride. Nico meets a few people along the way that help her understand and deal with her loss. This story showed the ups and downs we all face when we lose someone close to us.
I give Runaway Train 4 stars. The story is so heartfelt and complex that it made me want to keep reading. I think the author did a wonderful job of giving us a character in Nico that was able to grow throughout the book. Readers can expect a wild ride full of laughs, tears, and nostalgia.
